I haven’t looked at any of this yet but these materials could be useful for us and for future new teams that we’re supporting

At the risk of being overwhelming, since most of you are starting practices next week, here's some stuff that includes a bunch of resources

Open Forum

- Slide Deck Templates

    - I forgot to mention that I would have kids seat themselves based on whether they agreed or disagreed with the open forum resolution (you'll see agree / disagree on the deck - that's the side of the room kids would go to based on what they thought)

    - I also totally forgot I used other kinds of openings besides open forum including rebuttal circles, 30 second speeches, etc

Other Lesson Materials

    - Oh, look at that, apparently I started writing up https://docs.google.com/document/d/1n0RsMkvuWcd-RdunZjpMKu1wCMC59LPIPFIc38IxZxc/edit?usp=sharing three years ago. Cool.

    - Oh wow, I apparently set up an https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1LYMDD2RfyR2zt3nZYlaOrYQGJPpjanZq?usp=sharing to use while coaching coaches. Very cool.

- Slide Deck Templates

    - It took me an hour to find this but FINALLY https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1l7tf_nOHJiM7L2Rzt-DE_e3fPai5QAuapMRi1LXO6r0/edit?usp=sharing I used my last year at AFBHS (aka my favorite one because every year I tweaked it) You'll find Debate Open Forum on slide 13 and Congress on slide 22.

        - Also please let me draw your attention to the Dhttp://wheeldecide.com/index.php?c1=Impromptu+Speech&c2=Pen+Drill&c3=A+Drill&c4=Watermelon+Drill&c5=Backwards+Drill&t=Congress+Warm+Up+Wheel&time=5 on Slide 18. I forgot all about this. I'd let a kid come "spin the wheel" (by clicking on it) every day and then we would do whatever warm-up it landed on

            - Impromptu Speech: what it sounds like

            - Watermelon: Kids would read their case as quickly as they could but would have to say the "watermelon" in between every word

            - Pen Drill: classic - have to read your case with a pen in your mouth

            - A  Drill: Like "watermelon" but instead the word "a"

            - Backwards: Kids would read their case backwards

        - On Slide 15 you'll see I reserved time every day to do a short teambuilder. See below for teambuilder ideas.

        - On slide 16: During the first week of school, I gave every kid a colorful piece of paper in the shape of a puzzle piece and told them to write about themselves on it. Each day I called a random kid to the front to read theirs to the class and then tape it to my wall connecting it to the other pieces already there from past days/classes. (This was to reinforce the idea that we were all a part of the team and every piece/person mattered)

    - Oh look, here is the https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1tyQRQ6oCrP3Sq5g8oFcQnMjHfQLcuzIL6CmqSeBesLE/edit?usp=sharing - you might want to check out the last slide in particular

Sample Cases

Icebreakers/Teambuilders

- https://docs.google.com/document/d/1RbC01L471KusHF_PdnmLq58AqO4U-LYK/edit (really important for first couple of weeks)

Long term lesson planning

- https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11dIrYnD5qHmEZuwX0pPLtkWvsPT4CxKc0p0FrQ8PG5Q/edit?usp=sharing. It's how I sketched out the main thing I'd be doing every day

Culture building

- Someone (Yeats? Plutarch? Socrates? https://atkinsbookshelf.wordpress.com/2021/01/09/famous-misquotations-education-is-not-the-filling-of-a-pail-but-the-lighting-of-a-fire/) once said, "Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire." And I know there's so much in the world stressing the kids out so I would try to start every week with a feel-good inspirational story. Whenever I heard one, I'd add it to https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1DddzwWvxPcV8H00Y1c9fnvWe51Oc75jdr_GEeDgGMkI/edit?usp=sharing so I'd have good ones to choose from.

- At every tournament we went to at AFBHS, I would *force* every kid to let me record each of them doing 30 seconds of their piece. They hated it https://drive.google.com/file/d/1nXPb_cVLUM8OgYQSm7yf0mhTf1B_Hg6r/view?usp=sharing. I plan on doing this at the BDLs this year. You might want to skip to 10:47 to see how I would always them with shout outs for the kids (and perhaps the song will be familiar lol)

- I also collected footage throughout the year to make https://vimeo.com/268912229 celebrating everything the kids learned. I've got some camera crew folks on deck and we'll get them in your schools and at tournaments to get footage for this. You might want to skip to 7 minutes to see how I handled shout outs

- As I mentioned today, I made sure I hung up a sign with our Big Goal right up front. (e.g. Goal: 10  qualified for the New York State Championship.) I'd also make a page that said "# Qualified So Far" and put it in a sheet protector and hang it up next to it. Every time someone qualified, I would update the number with a dry erase marker (why the sheet protector came in handy)

I also would set up a bulletin board with the name of every tournament we'd be attending that year in a separate sheet protector. When the tournament passed, I would remove the tournament name sheet and insert a sheet with the team photo and results from the tournament. I can help with setting this up too. You can see some samples of what I mean as well as some other stuff I would hang up on the bulletin board https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1qnvQ_4rBY50kMoiNHp6QoOTQgY27_79jdzXOX4f0Rog/edit#slide=id.g149e3a26504_0_0
